I have been passionate about design my whole life. I began by disassembling all of my broken or faulty items to help me understand how they worked. I then attempted, and often failed, to put them back together in the hopes of making something superior. I learned that I enjoy the process of questioning and improving on the things that surround me. Design feeds my innate curiosity. The field of industrial design is attractive because: not only does one have to be creative; but, they need to understand how a piece of equipment will function and feel to the user within the context of everyday use. I am amazed by the fact that something as basic as good design of a door handle or chair can be worn out and used by thousands, maybe millions, of people, and may subtly aid and improve the quality of life for those people without them being aware that they are using a piece of design that is made with thought and care. A few years ago I started drawing re-designs of things around me, I was particularly driven by the redrawing of items which had obviously been designed by someone with little, or no, understanding of design (like a water bottle that was awkwardly shaped) and/or tools with poor ergonomic design. I was able to work on my designs using basic CAD to design and help make physical prototype using cardboard and/or foam. I learned the hard way that a balance of both design and emotional empathy toward users and constraints of sustainability as well as respect for the materials and manufacturability is necessary. I appreciate that designing products requires an ability to seamlessly integrate skills. This includes the ability to perceive the world as an engineer, tell a story as a writer, and observe the world as an anthropologist. # Personal Statement: Industrial Design From an early age, I've seen design as a means to engage and analyze the world around me. All of these ideas helped to form my future career plans. At first, it was an attraction to design products to use them better. I found myself making sketches and redesigning annoying objects from my surrounding such as an inconveniently-shaped water bottle and the tool that was built ignoring ergonomic issues. After a while, I learned some basic CAD software, began to experiment with prototypes made out of cardboard or foams. My passion for industrial design solidified when I began sketching ways I could improve on everyday objects. # Personal Statement: Industrial Design Design is my way of perceiving the world and the things in it. As I grew up I developed more and more interest in design and today, as a grown up, I can say with absolute certainty that I want to be an Industrial Designer. Industrial design is a problem solving medium. Designs are created with the intent for people to perceive them and interact with them on a physical level. This leads to a common misconception among many that designers only focus on how things look and that they only create things with visual aesthetic value. However, the visual aspect of a design only makes up a small portion of what the full design actually is. The majority of the design focuses on how the object will function and how it will interact with the user. Because of this, designers have the ability to affect the lives of millions of people without ever being recognized for their work. Often the designs that have the greatest impact are those that have been so seamlessly integrated into our lives that we use them without even realizing it. A simple door handle, a chair, or even a tool to make a task easier are all examples of designs that fall into this category. One area of focus of my current design work is to look at poorly designed products of everyday use and to try and redesign them. Recently I have started to create ideas for a new water bottle that doesn’t have any harsh edges and is of an adequate shape for comfortable use. I have also started to think about how to redesign a peeler for use in the kitchen that is more ergonomic for the user. Along with my current design work I have started to teach myself how to use CAD design software and have started to create prototypes of my designs using items such as cardboard and foam. I have come to realize that along with successful designs there are many designs that fail but each time a design fails it teaches the designer something about design and why that design didn’t work. This is a delicate balance between trying to find out the needs of users and trying to work within the constraints of materials and of manufacturing as well as trying to make sustainable designs. Industrial design is a diverse and very wide subject with many areas where a versatile individual can be of use. An industrial designer needs to have the mind of an engineer, the communication skills of a story teller and the observer of human behavior of an anthropologist. I intend to develop my skills in all of these areas in order to be able to create designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also effective within a range of limitations (cost, materials for production, methods of production etc.) and also environmentally friendly. Industrial Design at university will provide me with the opportunity to develop my design skills even further. Industrial Design is a very creative subject and with the help of experienced tutors and the feedback of my peers I aim to develop into a very skilled designer. The use of workshops and a variety of different materials to create prototypes of designs will also be extremely beneficial in my quest for design excellence. As well as creating good designs I also aim to be able to put my design ideas into practice using my instincts and creative skills to create designs that are not only of high quality but also effective and practical. While designing products involves making decisions about appearance, Industrial Design involves so much more than aesthetics. A product also has to function properly, provide a pleasant experience for the user, and be part of the flow of a person's day-to-day activities. I am very interested in the concept that a well designed product could positively affect many people without those individuals even realizing the amount of thought that went into the creation of that product. This became clear to me after I had begun to conceptualize and draw redone versions of everyday items that frustrated me. An example of one such item is a poorly designed water bottle. I learned basic computer-aided drafting (CAD) programs and began building prototypes using cardboard and foam. I failed numerous times before finally figuring out which designs worked and which ones didn’t. This process helped me understand that successful designs are comprised of both empathy toward users and a strong understanding of technical aspects — including material science, manufacturing methods, etc., as well as a commitment to sustainability. To me, design is the way I make sense of things. When I was little, I’d take apart broken appliances, trying to figure out where everything went so that I could put them back together in a better way. I’m still doing this, only now I’m trying to do it more intentionally and thoughtfully. This drive is what brings me to industrial design. I love industrial design because it combines my love for both art and practical problem-solving. A well-designed object can be appreciated aesthetically, but it can also have such a strong impact on people’s everyday lives. The best designs are those that you don’t notice, but would find incredibly inconvenient if they were gone: the door handle that fits perfectly in your hand, the office chair that supports your body properly, the kitchen tool that makes cooking more efficient. I first became interested in industrial design after I started sketching modifications to some of the things around me that didn’t work the way they should. I picked up a book on CAD and taught myself some 3D modeling, experimenting with shapes and materials. I learned through trial and error, making prototypes out of cardboard and foam and taking them apart over and over again. I’ve come to realize that design involves balancing multiple concerns—functionality, comfort, materials, and production costs. I am interested in studying industrial design because it requires me to develop a range of skills. Industrial designers are required to think critically, analyze objectively, communicate creatively, and collaborate with others. I want to learn how to combine all of these skills together to create meaningful, well-crafted products. I also want to learn how to create products that are sustainable and mindful of their environmental footprint. I’m excited to join the Industrial Design program because it will provide me with the guidance, resources, and expertise that I need to refine my craft and become an effective designer. I look forward to receiving feedback from professors and classmates, working in workshops with new materials, and learning how to use industry-standard tools and software. By pursuing a degree in industrial design, I hope to gain the knowledge and skills needed to create thoughtful, functional, and aesthetically pleasing products that solve real-world problems.
