# Personal Statement: Industrial Design Industrial Design, as a discipline, reveals the designer behind each and every object. It was then that I realized that I had developed a curiosity about how products are created. My curiosity eventually turned into a desire to pursue industrial design. The reason I love industrial design is that it combines two things that I find to be very interesting: problem solving and creativity. However, it does not stop there. While many people view industrial design as being based solely on aesthetics, it really comes down to understanding people so well that you can create products which enhance their quality of life without them even realizing it. For example, a well-designed chair can support the users back without them having to think about it. A well-designed tool will feel comfortable in your hand from the moment you pick it up because someone considered how heavy it is, how large it is, and how easy it is to move while designing the tool. # Personal Statement Industrial Design I am convinced that everything we see, whether consciously or unconsciously, offers a glimpse into the priorities, values and understanding of human experience that guided its creator. This was no great revelation but rather one that hit me quite hard in the 9th grade when I was deconstructing an unfixable appliance on my parent's kitchen counter, not to fix it but to grasp why its developers engineered it in the way they did. That thought, at once so basic and in depth, never left me. Instead it morphed into Industrial Design. The aspect of the field that immediately drew me in is its ability to blend creativity with function, in such that it’s not just aesthetics but is rooted deeply in understanding people to provide for the day to day lives of people without them ever being consciously aware of its presence. The support of a well designed office chair not require the occupant to pay conscious attention to ergonomic stress. Such qualities in a good object, that a product may feel second nature, in its very tactile nature, is a quality to be proud and one I wish to be accountable for producing, at every stage, for everyone it has been designed to service. I continue to this day to independently study various ways to provide better goods for the community around me through personal projects ranging from attempting a redesign of the common desk drawer organizer for the minimalist apartment dwellers to the prototyping of more easily gripped measuring cups designed specifically for limited hand functionality. Each of these undertakings reaffirmed to me the deep sense of compassion needed to do effective and human-centered Industrial Design. Though the process is one I’d say I was driven, the testing and failing of the many prototype attempts only seemed to guide me towards what the product truly needed to become in the form and the functional value it required to add for the end user. Not to mention I wish to acquire the scientific understanding of not only how materials function but the impact they have on our environment as well as its cultural implications; a holistic approach Industrial design seems to take, the sort that takes all areas such as engineering, psychology, science and even art and puts it all into a beautifully designed and functionally sound product. Ultimately I intend to create items which assist humanity, on the macro and micro level; things which streamline daily lives and provide peace of mind without demand. Getting accepted into Industrial Design program is, I feel, the only necessary means toward achieving such a goal.

A well-designed tool has a natural feel in the hand since someone had previously taken into account factors such as grip, weight, and movement before the user held it.
