By integrating different theoretical traditions and methodologies to analyze data collected in multiple locations around the world, this paper seeks to create a complete picture of how affordable housing challenges can vary across geographically distinct and institutionally varied locales. Design was always my way of looking at things. When I was a kid, I would disassemble all sorts of appliances to figure out how they were made up of individual pieces. I never did quite get it right when I put them back together again. The ability to look at things differently and to find ways to fix or build on what existed is an ability that grew and developed over time. It went from being some sort of childish curiosity to an adult desire to pursue Industrial Design. One of the things that attracts me to Industrial Design is the fact that it combines two areas of activity - creating new ideas (design) and solving complex problems. While designing products involves making decisions about appearance, Industrial Design involves so much more than aesthetics. A product also has to function properly, provide a pleasant experience for the user, and be part of the flow of a person's day-to-day activities. I am very interested in the concept that a well designed product could positively affect many people without those individuals even realizing the amount of thought that went into the creation of that product. This became clear to me after I had begun to conceptualize and draw redone versions of everyday items that frustrated me. An example of one such item is a poorly designed water bottle. I learned basic computer-aided drafting (CAD) programs and began building prototypes using cardboard and foam. I failed numerous times before finally figuring out which designs worked and which ones didn’t. This process helped me understand that successful designs are comprised of both empathy toward users and a strong understanding of technical aspects — including material science, manufacturing methods, etc., as well as a commitment to sustainability. In addition to the nature of the discipline itself, I am attracted to Industrial Design because it offers great flexibility. Housing affordability issues were once seen as local problems, generally limited to low-income individuals within large metropolitan areas; however, the scale and scope of this issue have significantly grown. Middle-income families in many urban areas are now finding that they can no longer afford stable housing options. This is creating significant consequences in terms of social equity, public health and overall macroeconomic performance. Therefore, it is essential for all contemporary urban planners, policymakers and economists to understand the complexities of urban housing affordability. The purpose of this literature review is to synthesize the wide array of scholarly research regarding urban housing affordability. The goal is to outline the development of this research area from a relatively simple economic ratio to a complex multi-faceted structural problem. Historically, housing affordability was quantitatively assessed using very straightforward measures — most notably the widely-accepted metric that housing costs should represent no greater than 30% of gross household income. Although easy to calculate and use, there is growing evidence among contemporary scholars that these measures do not adequately capture the qualitative aspects of what constitutes affordable housing. Recently, researchers have developed more sophisticated assessments of housing affordability that incorporate multiple factors — such as the residual income approach that examines whether households retain enough disposable income for non-housing expenditures including food, healthcare and education after deducting their housing expenses.
