I am interested in studying industrial design, because there are so many things around us that affect our lives, the way we live, our actions and our style. A successful product will make a chore easier, it will address an unmet need, lower the amount of waste, or simply provide a moment of joy in another's life. What is always interested me are those objects that blend the functional and the beautiful, and frequently I wonder how and why a particular product is constructed the way it is (and how and why it can be made better). I find Industrial Design fascinating due to the blend of problem solving, easy understanding of the human being, creativity, technology etc. I like to think about new concepts, sketch out ideas and have fun making models and trying out different solutions, but I also like the research aspect of design: spending time observing a person and determining their needs and how these needs can be turned into a realization. Design for me is not just about about looks, it is about how it works, how it is made, how it fits into people's lives and how it affects the world. A particular focus of interest is in sustainable and user-centred design. Overconsumption, scarce resources and harm to the environment all pose challenges to society, and that puts designers in the position of designing products that are durable, repairable, efficient and meaningful. I am interested in adopting and investigating materials, manufacturing, ergonomics and digital tools to create innovative and responsible products. By studying the field of industrial design I would be able to gain the skills I need to take ideas and turn them into tangible and useful products. Personal Statement: Industrial Design Design has always been my language to comprehend the world. When I was a kid, I tore up all the appliances that wouldn't work sometimes, just for the fun of watching all the layers that could fit, only to try and get them to function again for good (which I often failed in doing). That drive to question, deconstruct and improve has crystallised and matured along the way, resulting in a full-blown passion for industrial design. I'm attracted to this field because it's sort of a mixture of the two: creativity and problem-solving. Another part of being an industrial designer is the way it works, feels good in their hands, and integrates into their lifestyle. I love it when an object is designed to help thousands of people improve their lives and no one is ever aware of the design efforts that went into the object: a door handle that's intuitive, a chair that supports the body properly, a tool that makes a difficult task an easy one. It was when I started sketching some improved versions of the everyday objects I encountered in my daily life that I became interested in it—a cumbersome water bottle, kitchen utensils that defied ergonomics. I found the ground rules for how to prototype and test by making cardboard and foam models and figuring out why some work and some don't, and I got these self-taught CAD skills as a result. It was an experiment that taught me that good design was a combination of empathy and rigour – an ability to understand their needs and limitations of material, manufacturing and sustainability. I also like industrial design, it requires versatility. The designer should use the mind of an engineer, the hand of a storyteller and the eyes of an anthropologist. **Introduction** Housing affordability is now one of the most important social-economic issues in today's world of the rapid urbanization of the globe. As the problem that was once considered to be one of low income populations in hyper-globalized metropolises, the housing affordability crisis has grown in its geographic spread and social presence in the population. The middle class today in various city settings have come to be generic evictuees from stable housing markets. The gulf between rising house prices and flat household incomes in an urban context has serious consequences for social equity, both public health and macroeconomic stability as cities remain the leading drivers of economic growth and migration. Because of this, the interaction between urban housing prices and their determinants is of pivotal importance in current urban policy and planning as well as urban economics. This literature review lays out the many disciplinary strands of work on urban housing affordability and how it has shifted from a simple ratio to a multi-dimensional structural crisis. Until now, housing affordability was assessed using traditional quantitative measures, most prominently the "30 percent of income" rule. Although easy to compute, modern researchers point out that these 'simple' ratios are not representative of the qualitative aspects of affordability. The recent literature has thus turned to more sophisticated models, referred to as the "residual income" model, which state if a household has rent or mortgage payments, how much income is left for essentials including food, health care, and education. Moreover, a growing body of research has put the location of affordable housing back on the agenda, highlighting that affordable homes can have hiddenly high costs of reaching sustainable alternative transport options, which can simply shift the burden rather than solve the problem. The academic literature also identifies a complex array of systemic factors that contribute to the affordability crisis, beyond definitional tussles. On the demand side, researchers study the impact of strong zoning regulations, past “red-lining” practices, geographically resource-limited locations and NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) sentiment on residential development and on price hikes. In contrast, demand-side analyses direct attention to housing as an asset class for the investment of global capital, and not as a social good, as a key factor in displacement and gentrification. In this review paper, we develop this different and sometimes contradictory interpretative framework to map the state-of-the-art knowledge on affordability in urban housing. It first examines current and changing approaches in the measurement of housing stress. Then it examines the structural sources of un-affordability shortages, on both the supply and demand sides. Lastly, it considers the effectiveness of different policy responses, from inclusionary zoning and rent control to social housing policies, with a view to outlining some of the key research gaps and possible directions on how to address more equitable urban futures.
